RIP Eddie Tobin
“All at Security Scotland are deeply saddened by the recent death of our Group Chairman Eddie Tobin💔.
Eddie was a well-known face within the Scottish entertainment & late-night industry.
In his early entertainment days, Eddie – who signed Billy Connolly, managed The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and a host of Celtic and Rangers players. He set Midge Ure on the road to stardom and wrote a book about the golden era of Scotland’s dance hall circuit titled “Are Ye Dancin”.
Eddie then became a massive part of the late-night economy in Scotland, a true pioneer of the industry working with premier entertainment operators, Stakis, Scottish & Newcastle and Carnegies Leisure.
Eddie stayed within the night-economy moving to the security sector as Managing Director of UpFront Security, and assisted driving forward change in the security industry in Scotland.
In 2006 he branched out and started his own facilities company called Group Scotland which was split into 2 divisions – Security Scotland and Cleaning Scotland, which he continued to be the driving force behind.
James Glackin, Managing Director commented “I have had the upmost pleasure of knowing Eddie for over 30 years. Alongside Mark, Eddie, and the rest of our board of Directors, we have built Security Scotland to what it is today. Losing Eddie is not only a massive loss to our Company, but the security industry in general. Eddie Tobin will remain an “irreplaceable personal void in my life”. The term father figure doesn’t do justice to the relationship we had, alongside the guidance and direction he was always there to offer advice on a personal level as well as in business. We will continue what you started Eddie, and as a rule of your ethos in life, we will always have a laugh along the way doing it, you will always be missed.”
Mark Thorburn, Director commented “since forming Security Scotland with Eddie & James Glackin in 2006, there was never a dull day with Eddie in the office, his stories were enthralling, he was a great mentor and a true friend to me in the office, with my name being Mark James Edward Thorburn it was maybe destiny for us all to be together, I will really miss him and his chats and his stories and poetic one liners “she was only a bird in a gilded cage” was a favourite song, I had to look it up to see the full lyrics! which I now know. Thanks for everything Eddie you will be really missed, love Mark.”
Chris Callaghan, Operations Director commented “I’ve known Eddie for over 20 years dating back to my nightclub management days and we always kept in touch. I was then fortunate enough to join Security Scotland in 2016 and work very closely with Eddie and our fellow directors and there was never a dull moment. I’m pretty sure plenty will testify, once met never forgotten, what a truly infectious character he was, you never heard the same story twice, he will be sorely missed both as a colleague and friend. Rest in peace Eddie.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Elspeth, Chris, Claire, and families during this sad time.”
