SIA Regional Network Lead

While our teams are working hard on the frontline our Management Team are also working closely alongside the Security Industry Authority to help drive and improve industry standards. Kerry Gibson, Security Scotland’s Compliance Manager is the SIA Regional Network Lead for Scotland. Chaired by four industry business leaders from SIA Approved Contractors across the UK, the Regional Networks are a recent SIA initiative to reinforce and improve standards within the private security industry. Each regional network will host a quarterly community forum, in which those within the industry will be able to exchange views and ideas on specific industry topics. Launched last year the inaugural meetings covered ‘Sub-contracting within the private security industry’. All future topics have been created with the aim of improving industry collaboration. The first meeting of 2021 discussed the nature in which security officers and security businesses operate within the industry, focusing primarily on understanding the causes of workforce shortages. Run Hide Tell

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) has lowered the UK terrorism threat level from SEVERE (an attack is highly likely) to SUBSTANTIAL (an attack is likely). People should be alert but not alarmed & report concerns to the police. New and detailed guidance is now available providing details of the simple measures that can be taken to minimise the impact of an attack and help save lives. This builds on the principles of RUN, HIDE, TELL published by the National Counter Terrorism Security Office.

The UKCMA represents the highest professional performers within the crowd management sector, discusses progressive views and engages similar minded associations. The UKCMA members offer a voice to the tens of thousands of security and crowd professionals engaged within the events industry. Chris Callaghan, our Operations Director sits on the Strategy Group which meets three times a year and provides a forum for all members to address the emerging challenges facing the industry. The Association is consulted by a range of sector associations and organisations including the Security Industry Authority, ACS Standards and Strategy Group, The Events Industry Forum, the revision of The Purple Guide, One Industry One Voice, Event Safety Alliance, Football Safety Officers Association, Police and Security Working Group, Home Office SIA Transition Consultation Group, and endeavours to engage with all strands of the sector. Changes to the training you need for an SIA licence

Changes to the training you need for an SIA licence. The Security Industry Authority are making some changes to the training you need to take before you can get a front-line SIA licence. These changes will happen in April and October 2021. The changes are: on 1 April 2021, they will introduce updated qualifications for all sectors except Close Protection. from 1 April 2021, you must have a first aid qualification before you can apply for a Door Supervisor or Security Guard licence. on 1 October 2021, they will introduce updated Close Protection qualifications. from 1 October 2021, you must have one of the new qualifications or take top-up training before you can apply for a Door Supervisor and Security Guard licence – this includes renewals. Botanics

For the last 6 weeks, our Events Division have been deployed throughout December / January at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh for Christmas at the Botanics. Our customer safety team welcomed over 2,000 members of the public each night providing site information, directional & safety advice as well as reiterating the physical distancing message to all guests on site ensuring their safety.  The Event Manager commented “It was a privilege to work alongside your Management, Supervisors and all your team. Their professionalism, support, and level of service was instrumental in helping keep the event open in the midst of the uncharted territory of a global pandemic.  A massive thank you to all our team for carrying out their duties through every type of adverse weather condition, with a smile.
